Graphite pencil marks can usually be erased with a good-quality eraser, but harder marks (H-range) erase more cleanly than softer (B-range) ones. Colored and charcoal pencils are more difficult to erase due to their composition.

Softer graphite pencils (B-range, like 2B to 8B) are ideal for sketching and shading because they produce darker and smoother lines.

Pencils typically consist of a wooden (or plastic) casing and a graphite core. Some also contain clay, binders, and pigments (for colored pencils). Mechanical pencils use plastic or metal bodies with refillable graphite leads.
